Just read a review of Skipton mortgages which I don't think was fair. I've had a mortgage with the Skipton Building Society for seven years and cannot fault them.
Every time I've had cause to contact them they have dealt with my enquiries quickly and efficiently. Even down to claiming on my buildings insurance which was made hassle free as they handled everything for me.
I'm sure you could experience different levels of service from different branches but I've always had to deal with the head office because I don't have a local branch. This has never been a problem for them and they've never tried to fob me off to a branch or foreign telesales centre.
